There was a large push for recreational cannabis in my state in the years following the legalization of medical marijuana here.
- I don’t think marijuana users were expecting the high doctor fees & the currency paid to the state once a year to renew the medical marijuana card itself.
These cannabis users want to walk into a marijuana store & buy products off the shelf without needing an costly medical marijuana card & physician recommendation. And as long as they’re able to shop at a low-grade dispensary with bottom-shelf cannabis at low prices, they’re happy. By contrast, I want to use quality marijuana while I’m consuming the plant all day, every day. It is worth it for me to keep a medical marijuana card active if it means having access to the lower prices on the medical marijuana menus at all of the cannabis dispensaries. The recreational weed at cannabis dispensaries is subject to state taxes, so the prices on each product is higher compared to the medical cannabis products. If I get a top shelf jar of cannabis flower buds for $60 on the medical cannabis menu, I will honestly be paying $75 for the same jar if I shopped the recreational menu. I think this works for people who don’t consume enough marijuana to justify the doctor fees, however that’s not applicable to me. It makes a lot more sense for me to keep my medical marijuana card active if it means I’m paying lower prices every single time I visit a cannabis dispensary. Not to mention being able to visit other states with medical marijuana programs that also accept out-of-state cards.
